Welcome, Wonder Women everywhere!

(I had to include this Halloween picture because it's more "true" to Malynn than the ones on the website! LOL Forget the princesses and fairies. She proves daily that she's my Wonder Woman!)
It's my long-awaited first post for Little Lantern Designs! Even I can't believe I'm finally writing. I have 10 sundresses to sew, 4 bags to complete, a family to feed, and a load of mud-grass-syrup-soaked toddler clothes to wash! What, you may ask, am I doing writing, then?
By opening a business--especially an online business--I've opened my life up to the public for the first time in my life. With that has come more praise and congratulations that I could ever imagine! I have received so much encouragement from people across the United States and other countries. One added bonus of this job has been that I get to hear referral stories, gotcha-day stories, and stories about travels to China. I LOVE it. Sharing all of those memories with you definitely makes me sew faster and happier!
On the other hand, my life is now open to public scrutiny. Who knew this simple mom would be the topic of much blog discussion by some angry adult adoptees. It took me by surprise! Then my friend Jennifer called to tell me what I've always known (but somehow misplaced in my logical mind): They don't know my heart. And they don't. They don't know that I decided to open a business because I love my daughter. They don't know that this venture has nothing to do with sensationalizing my daughter's adoption. They don't know that it has nothing to do with politics or race.

It's meant to be a fun place to shop for whimsical clothes and accessories. It's a place to meet people who share a common interest. It's a place where I'm able to use my energy (and yours!) to do something good for children still in orphanages--by donating to Love Without Boundaries. I have no hidden agenda to create a negative stereotype for Asian women. I can't even begin to tell you how hurtful those comments have been.
So for those of you who are here for the long-haul, I hope that by sharing my life and my loves with you, you'll be able to better see my heart ... and to see why I do what I do!
With that said, Staci, my super web designer, said blogs are the new newsletters. Since my first degree was in journalism, you'd think this would be a snap for me. Nope. Never really had that driving ambition to win a Pulitzer. And, as you'll see in my blog, little talent for it!
As I think back about my attraction to journalism, I'm realizing more and more that everything truly comes full circle. I was attracted to journalism because I wanted to write for a magazine. (After completing two summer internships in big cities, that quickly changed!) I wanted to write for a magazine because I loved the glossy pages and vibrant pictures. As a child I would create my own glossy-paged descriptions in small, stapled versions of Montgomery Ward catalogs that I made for my dolls' clothing. So maybe our life-long dreams truly do start in childhood!
